Fort Worth Reaccredited as a Safe Community

Fort Worth, Texas, was first accredited in 2013 and has since made great strides in safety.

​Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council and Safe Communities America congratulate the residents and representatives of Fort Worth, Texas, on their reaccreditation as a Safe Community. Fort Worth has made efforts to improve safety outcomes and has committed to learning and using every opportunity to continuously improve its work and strategies.

"By achieving reaccreditation, Fort Worth and its citizens prove their strong commitment to safety at the community level," said Carrie Nie, director of Safe Communities America. "By focusing their efforts in a variety of areas, the people of Fort Worth have succeeded in reducing risk factors and making their town a safer place for citizens of all ages."

It's a really big deal to be re-certified, said Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. "This process has been going on for several years now and it's amazing the work that has been done by so many of our department heads and council. And it's heartwarming to see Fort Worth recognized. It fits nicely in with our healthy city initiative, our aging in place community, it all wraps around to make Fort Worth a stronger, more vibrant place to live."

According to the NSC State of Safety Report, more than 70% of the preventable deaths in the U.S. occur in homes and communities. No state received an "A" for safety in the report, and Texas received a "D" overall. However, Fort Worth is proof that cities through collaboration and partnership can have a significant impact on the safety of their residents and thus help entire states improve safety.

In the five years since Fort Worth first earned accreditation as a Safe Community, its citizens and representatives have made great strides in many areas of safety. Fort Worth has seen a 12% decrease in the rate of 911 calls related to older adult falls and has installed 10 prescription drug drop off kiosks to collect unneeded medications. Since their installation, the total pounds collected annually has more than doubled the volume collected prior to the kiosks.
