The collection, analysis and dissemination of unintentional injury and fatality statistics have been a focus for the National Safety Council since its inception. The first comprehensive statistical compendium ever produced relating to unintentional injuries and deaths was published in the early 1920s, shortly after the council was formed. Since the 1920s, as a testament to its reliance on data as a measure of progress and guidance, statistical information has been published by the council on an annual basis without interruption – first as Accident Facts® and more recently as Injury Facts®.
Injury Facts® is a complete reference source for safety statistics. It presents the most current occupational, motor vehicle, home, community, state and international injury statistics on deaths, nonfatal injuries and their costs. The latest edition of Injury Facts® contains data for 2010 and earlier years, depending on the source.

Under contract to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, the Research & Statistical Services group created a report  including injury and death estimates for calendar years 2003 through 2011. The National Safety Council’s work is an extension of, but independent of, the estimates made for 2001-2002 by Heiden Associates, which are included here for reference and reported more fully in the June/July 2003 issue of Injury Insights (Heiden & McGonegal, 2003).
