Promote Fire Safety Tips During National Fire Prevention Week

Itasca, IL – Oct. 9-15 is National Fire Prevention Week and the National Safety Council has partnered with Amerex and First Alert to provide information and tools to help keep people safe. In 2009, there were 3,200 unintentional deaths related to fire, smoke and flames – the sixth leading cause of unintentional death – according to the Council’s Injury Facts, 2011 Edition. A variety of materials to prevent fire-related tragedies can be found at nsc.org/firepreventionweek.

“As we head into the cooler months, risk of fire increases for reasons such as a greater use of heating equipment. Fire Prevention Week is a great time to focus on how to prevent and fight unexpected fires,” said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “The Council appreciates the support of Amerex and First Alert to help spread these important fire
prevention messages.”

Take steps to prevent fires:

  • Have properly working smoke alarms
  • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly and change the batteries at least once a year
  • Place smoke alarms on each floor of your home and in each bedroom
  • Plan a family escape route and practice it once a month
  • Install a home sprinkler system
  • Place fire extinguishers throughout your home and make sure everyone in the house knows how to use them

Make your family safer by completing a home fire safety checklist and identifying fire risks in your home. For more information on fire safety, visit nsc.org/firepreventionweek.
