National Safety Council Urges: Drive Safe, Drive Sober this Labor Day Weekend

Itasca, IL –There will be 439 traffic fatalities during the three-day Labor Day holiday period that begins at midnight on Friday, Aug. 29 and ends at midnight on Monday, Sept. 1, according to the National Safety Council estimates. NSC estimates that traffic deaths this Labor Day will account for about 13 percent of deaths on U.S. roadways through the month of September.

The council further estimates that 374 lives may be saved because people are wearing seatbelts and that an additional 105 lives could be saved if all wore seatbelts.

NSC urges Americans to drive safe and sober this Labor Day weekend. The average number of traffic fatalities during the six most recent Labor Day holidays was 13 percent higher than during equivalent non-holiday periods.

The council also supports this holiday weekend’s crackdowns expected from state law enforcement agencies participating in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. campaign. This aggressive, national program to prevent impaired driving focuses on combining high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness through advertising and publicity. Drivers caught impaired will be immediately arrested.

Last year, the council estimated 490 traffic fatalities during the three-day Labor Day weekend; the actual 2007 count is not yet available. In 2006, the council estimated 533 Labor Day weekend traffic fatalities; the actual count was 487.

The National Safety Council (www.nsc.org) saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the roads, through leadership, research, education and advocacy.
