 Preparation is key to safety
National Safety Council promotes emergency preparedness this National Safety Month

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council on June 16 will launch its Emergency Preparedness week as part of National Safety Month, an annual observance to educate and encourage safe behaviors around top causes of preventable injuries and deaths. Throughout the week, helpful information on planning for emergencies of all types will be available.

It is recommended that families have a plan in case of an emergency, and practice it at least twice a year. Plans should take the physical capabilities of family members in mind, including children and older adults.

When planning for a potential emergency, the basics of survival are important. Consider the following items when creating an emergency preparedness kit:
  • Water (one gallon per person, per day for at least three days)
  • Enough nonperishable food (for at least three days) and can opener
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Tool kit
  • Moist towelettes and garbage bags for sanitation
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape
  • Cell phone and portable charger
The Council is calling on organizations, communities and the public to help share this information and encourage safe behaviors. Posters, tip sheets and crossword puzzles are available for free download at nsc.org/nsm. Additional materials are available for NSC members to promote emergency preparedness.

NSC thanks National Safety Month sponsors Grainger and Toyota for their commitment to safety.
