National Safety Council promotes prevention of slips, trips and falls this National Safety Month
Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council on June 2 will launch its Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls week as part of
National Safety Month
, an annual observance to educate
and encourage safe behaviors around
top causes of preventable injuries and deaths. The week-long effort will provide information the public can use to make their homes safe from common hazards.
Falls are the second-leading cause of unintentional death in homes and communities. With summer weather providing a perfect opportunity for home improvement, proper ladder setup and usage can help prevent
slips and falls at work or home.
Ladder safety tips:
Choose the right ladder for the job and make sure you have received training on how to use it properly
Check the area you will be working in for hazards, such as cords or objects in the walkway
Don’t stand any higher than the third rung from the top of a ladder
Do not use ladders outdoors in windy or inclement weather, and if the weather turns while you are on it, descend immediately
Always keep at least three points of contact with the ladder (i.e., two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand)
The Council is calling on organizations, communities and the public to help share this information and encourage safe behaviors. Posters, tip sheets and crossword puzzles are available for free download at
. Additional materials are available for NSC members to promote the prevention of slips, trips and falls.
NSC thanks Grainger
for being a Safety Champion of National Safety Month and the exclusive sponsor of Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls week.
