The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 provides evidence-based nutrition information and advice to help Americans live longer, healthier lives. The recommendations are based on the dietary and nutrient needs of the general population as well as more specific populations such as pregnant women and individuals over 50.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are intended for individuals 2 years and older as well as those who are at risk for chronic disease. The three major goals for Americans summarized in the Dietary Guidelines 2010 are:
- Balance calories with physical activity to maintain a healthy weight
- Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products and seafood
- Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars and refined sugars.
Healthy eating habits include nutrient rich foods and appropriate calorie intake. Creating healthy eating habits can significantly increase the quality of life and reduce the risk of illness and chronic disease.
