• Between 2000 and 2004, tobacco use cost the United States $193 billion annually in lost productivity and medical costs. That yields an average cost of $1,400 per employee per year.
• Secondhand smoke costs $10 billion a year on health care expenditures.
• Lifetime medical costs for smokers are significantly higher than lifetime medical costs for nonsmokers. For males tobacco use costs $19,200 (2010 dollars) more in lifetime medical costs and $21,200 (2010 dollars) more in lifetime medical costs in women who smoke
• Seventy percent of smokers say they want to quit. Forty five percent quit for at least one day annually.
• It may take 8-10 attempts before a person is able to quit long term.
• Installing special ventilation systems are not recommended because they are expensive and not effective. They do not clear the air of secondhand smoke and the toxins and poisons found in it. 
• Construction and maintenance costs are estimated to be 7% higher in buildings that allow smoking than in buildings that are smoke-free.
