The National Safety Council is uniquely positioned to help
prevent prescription drug overdose, one of the top leading causes of unintentional death. NSC educates employers, prescribers, legislators and the public
about this epidemic and the roles they can each take to bring about change. Our efforts are led by subject matter experts and shaped by an expert panel and collaborating medical associations.
Nearly 30,000 people die each year from opioid overdoses, and more than 19,000 of those are from prescription opioids. Since 1999, unintentional prescription drugs deaths have increased 287%. Three in four people who abuse the drugs get them from friends or family, which means the most fatally abused drug today is legal and sitting in the medicine cabinet.

NSC also offers a
wealth of information about other dangers people face every day in their homes and communities, and proudly supports the
Safe Communities America program. This accreditation program recognizes communities that prioritize safety, gets citizens involved and keeps them engaged in reducing injuries and deaths.
