Carbon Monoxide
February 29, 2000

Most of us think of pollution as something that originates outdoors from factories and cars. But it has a deadly, indoor cousin. Look at the chilling effects of malfunctioning heating systems on today's EnvironMinute. [:12]

Faulty in-home combustion devices can emit sickening levels of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide as well as unhealthy particles and hydrocarbons. Two hundred people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning, largely from malfunctioning heating systems. Exposure to carbon monoxide reduces the body's ability to carry oxygen. Effects include sleepiness, nausea, headaches, and dizziness. It can be difficult to identify carbon monoxide sickness because the symptoms mimic common illnesses. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning get fresh air immediately and leave the house. It's probably best to seek medical help and then the services of a good heating contractor.[:37]

The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
