Household Pesticides (Part 2)
February 27, 1996

Improperly stored pesticides can turn a kitchen cabinet into a poison trap for kids. We'll offer a few safety tips to help you put these household bugaboos in their place on today's EnvironMinute. [:11]

Child-resistant packaging of pesticides helps, but it doesn't totally prevent accidental exposures and poisonings, and additional safeguards should be taken. Store all pesticides in locked cabinets. When using pesticides, follow directions carefully, and remove children, toys, and pets from the area for the recommended time period. Never store pesticides in containers that children may associate with food or drink, and never place pest strips or baits where children can get to them. Also, be sure to keep the number of the local poison control center near your telephone. Taking precautions now may help you avoid rushing a child to the emergency room in the future. [:37]
