
Radon, a naturally occurring gas found in some homes, is the second leading cause of U.S. lung cancer deaths. This unsettling statistic has led 17 states to enact legislation requiring radon disclosure during real estate transactions, and six other states may soon follow suit. After working with EPA to spur consumer action to reduce radon levels, the National Association of Realtors endorsed radon disclosure and testing requrements. The majority of real estate deals have not included a radon test, but considering the health risks, it might be in the best interest of would-be homeowners to insist on one, whether or not their state law requires it.
