Sun and Shades
November 25, 1996

Sunglasses are a natural in the summer, but protecting eyes from the harmful rays of the sun should be a year-round habit. We'll take a closer look at shades on today's EnvironMinute. [:11]

In some parts of the U.S., sports like snowmobiling and skiing are replacing swimming and sunbathing. But the sun remains a constant danger to our eyes. Whether you're racing downhill or just taking a brisk walk, harmful ultraviolet rays can be causing damage. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection all through the year can help keep eyes healthy. Shatter-proof plastic lenses are perhaps best for those with an active lifestyle, but scratch resistant glass lenses work well for people who live at a slower pace. Whenever you go outdoors, don't forget your shades. Now that we know more about the sun's harmful effects, wearing sunglasses is more than just a cool move. [:37]

The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
