Mercury Alert
January 26, 1998
Mercury is a toxic substance that can be found in your home and in the environment. Two federal agencies felt the need to remind the public of its dangers. You'll learn why on today's EnvironMinute. [:11]
Mercury is a naturally occurring metal that can take different forms. Metallic mercury is used in thermometers, fluorescent bulbs, and barometers. Its silvery-white beads are attractive to children and reports of contamination are on the rise. Mercury can also leak into the environment from mining and industrial sites. Even at low levels, mercury can cause damage to the nervous system. That's why another form of mercury is also a concern. It's called methyl mercury and can be found in bacteria at the base of the food chain. Mercury levels can build as you go up the chain and pollute fish and predators. If you have any questions, call (800) 447-1544. And use lots of caution on even a little spilled mercury. [:38]
The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
