Tanning Problems
April 3, 1998
One in seven Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime. So if you're heading off to do some sun worshiping this spring, learn the secrets of worry-free worship on today's EnvironMinute. [:10]
When vacation time rolls around, many people migrate to warmer climates. Basking in the sun is one of life's pleasures. But, our planet's protective ozone layer has been damaged by pollutants called chlorofluorocarbons. Since more ultraviolet rays are now reaching the Earth, too much sun can be hazardous to your health. Besides skin cancer, excessive exposure can cause aging of the skin, cataracts, and immune system suppression. So, when preparing to migrate, be sure to pack along a hat, sunglasses, cover-up clothing, and sunscreen with an SPF over 15. Avoid the midday sun and tanning parlors. This way, your season in the sun won't leave you with an unwanted souvenir. [:38]
The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
