Skin Cancer Protection
August 21, 1998
One in five Americans will eventually develop skin cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is one of the few diseases that's largely preventable. You can beat the odds by following these tips on today's EnvironMinute. [:11]
You may love being outdoors in the summer sun, but there's one very good reason to take some precautions: One million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year. That makes it the most common form of cancer in the United States. Fair-skinned people and people with a family history of melanoma have the highest risk, but no one is immune. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every day, year-round. Make sure your outdoor wardrobe includes protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and good sunglasses. And avoid the sun at midday, when the ultraviolet rays are strongest. These measures will help you safely stay on the sunny side of life. [:37]
The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
