Sun Safe Sunglasses
August 28, 1998

You've probably heard lots of talk about how the ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet rays. We've made progress at keeping the ozone layer intact, but that doesn't mean we're safe from the rays. Grab your shades for today's EnvironMinute. [:13]

If you've been caught without your sunglasses on a bright day, you know how much that hurts your eyes. Over time, that kind of exposure works its damage, even with a perfectly health ozone layer. The sun's ultraviolet rays — UV for short — can harm your eyes and may lead to serious problems. Over many years, UV rays can cause cataracts which can cloud your vision. Cataracts grow on the lens of your eye and ofter require surgery. So make sure your sunglasses provide 100 percent UV protection. If you're buying new shades, check the UV rating on the label. Remember to use your sunglasses every time you face a day in the sun. [:36]

The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
