Right to Know
May 3, 1999

A factory in your community can release toxic chemicals into the air, land, and water, and never have to report it. But that will change soon. Your right-to-know on today's EnvironMinute. [:12]

The Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be better informed about toxic waste. It has proposed a right-to-know rule that looks at persistent chemicals in American communities. Persistent chemicals take a long time to degrade. That could make them a serious threat to your health and to the environment. Currently, a facility can use up to 25,000 pounds of a dangerous chemical without reporting it. The EPA's proposal would lower that threshold to 100 pounds. [:30]

The EnvironMinute is produced in cooperation with the National Safety Council and made possible by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. [:10]
