Washington – OSHA’s revision of its Hazard Communication Standard provides many benefits, but the agency should consider modifications for its final rule that more closely conform the standard to the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, the American Chemistry Council said.

Pittsburgh – California’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program Standard reduces workplace injuries at businesses that have previously been cited for failing to comply with specific safety provisions in the rule, a new study suggests.

2011 Distinguished Service to Safety Award (DSSA) Recipient

The Construction Division is proud to announce that David F. Matthes, CSP, CSHM, Corporate Safety Director, J.F. White Contracting Company Inc., was chosen as the 2011 DSSA award recipient representing the Construction Division. David was awarded during the Opening Session of the 2011 NSC Congress and Expo that was held on Monday, October 31, 2011 in Philadelphia, PA.

2011 Honorary Life Award (HLA) Honoree

The Construction Division is honored to announce that Brian H. Murphy was selected as the 2011 HLA award recipient representing the Construction Division. The HLA award recognizes those division members who have made significant, meaningful contributions to safety, health or the environment and who can no longer serve in a fully active capacity.

Construction Division Student Ambassador Award

The National Safety Council (NSC) through its Construction Division working with the College and University Strategic Advisory Group - Education & Research committee offers Graduate and Undergraduate (junior or senior year) students pursuing a degree in Occupational Safety & Health in the construction industry to submit an application to participate in the Construction Division Student Ambassador Award Program for the 2012 NSC Congress & Expo and Construction Division Meeting and Networking Reception to be held in Orlando, Florida October 21 - 24, 2012. If chosen, the award would be used to attend the Congress & Expo and the Construction Division's fall meeting and assist in defraying the costs of onsite participation.

As part of the Construction Division Student Ambassador Award Program requirements, awarded students must attend specified on-site Congress events and Post-Congress; share their experiences (as specified) through short essays of 120 words or less. Student Ambassador Requirements include but are not limited to:

Attending the Construction Division's annual Fall Meeting and Networking reception
Attending the NSC Congress and Expo Opening Session
Joining in the NSC Congress and Expo Welcome Reception
Attending two (2) on-site NSC Technical Sessions of your choice and Post-Congress, share your experience through short essays on how attending the sessions will help further your study and career goal(s).
Interviewing an occupational safety & health professional attendee who is aligned with your industry/area of interest attending the Congress or Expo; on the theme: “How has their Safety & Health Education Impacted their Career” and Post-Congress, report back.
Responding to a question in essay format on the theme: “The Safety and Health profession is changing. In what direction do you see the profession going, specifically in the construction industry, and how can an aspiring safety professional prepare themselves to be successful?” and Post-Congress, report back.

The 2012 Construction Division Student Ambassador application will be posted in the spring of 2012.
