National Safety Council Reports 4th of July Most Dangerous Holiday
Offers Tips for Injury-Free Celebration
Itasca, IL- The combination of travel, alcohol and fireworks has made July the nation’s
deadliest month and the 4th of July our most dangerous holiday. According to the
most recent data available from the National Safety Council, July 4, 2005 was the
most lethal holiday for drivers, with alcohol factoring into nearly half of all
motor vehicle deaths over the July 4th holiday.

Senate Resolution Declares June 2007 National Safety Month
National Safety Council Praised for Innovative Efforts to Promote Safe and Healthy
Communities
Washington – With a recent National Safety Council report citing a dramatic increase
in accidental death rates, the United States Senate has passed a resolution declaring
June as National Safety Month. Co-sponsored by Senators Mark Pryor (D-AR) and John
Sununu (R-NH), the resolution called June “an appropriate time to focus attention
on injury risks and preventions” due to the expected “increase in accidental injuries
and fatalities” that typically accompany the summer months.

Accidental Deaths Increasing at Alarming Rate Poisonings, Overdoses Seeing Greatest
Gains
Itasca, IL – Accidental deaths in the United States are rising at an alarming rate,
more than 20 percent over a 10-year period, reaching 113,000 deaths in 2005, according
to the latest data available. The National Safety Council (NSC) warns that at the
current rate, the nation’s all-time high of 116,385 accidental deaths, set in 1969,
could be surpassed in the next few years.

Robert W. Campbell Award Deadline Extended
The National Safety Council is extending the application deadline for its 2007 Robert
W. Campbell Award to June 30, 2007. The winner of this international award recognizing
business excellence in safety, health and environmental (SH & E) management
will be announced at the National Safety Council’s 95th Annual Congress & Expo
in Chicago on Oct. 15, 2007.

Window Safety Week is April 22-28
Since windows provide a secondary means of escape from a burning home or building,
every family should develop and practice an emergency escape plan in the event that
fire or smoke blocks the primary exit. Children may have to rely on a window to
escape in a fire, so help them learn to safely use a window under these circumstances.

Nationwide Survey Reveals Drivers Are Ill Prepared for Inclement Weather
When was the last time you changed your wiper blades? According to a recent survey
commissioned by Rain-X®, one out of every three drivers on the road today fail to
change their blades according to the National Safety Council’s recommended frequency
of once a year. In fact, 78 percent of motorists only change their wiper blades
afte the blades themselves begin to impair their visibility and have become a safety
hazard.

Winners of National Safety Council Radon Poster Contest to be Recognized
Winners of the National Safety Council’s 2007 National Radon Action Month Poster
Contest will have their work displayed as part of a campaign to raise awareness
about the dangers of the radioactive gas and to encourage more people to test their
homes for it. The poster contest was conducted in partnership with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Midas automotive service shops in the greater Chicago area are partnering with the
National Safety Council to promote safe teen driving by offering complimentary copies

containing specific action steps to help manage the learning process of teen driving
from beginner to independent driver levels.

National Safety Council announces Call for Applications for Robert W. Campbell Award
The Robert W. Campbell Award Program Committee invites organizations from around
the world to participate in the 2007 cycle of this prestigious international award
for business excellence in safety, health and environmental management.
The call for applications seeks successful business models from organizations that
excel in both SH&E and business performance. Case studies must demonstrate how
measurable achievement in SH&E performance is linked to productivity, profitability
and other measures of business performance.
