National Safety Council and McGraw-Hill Higher Education

Announce exclusive agreement to publish new line of emergency care training programs

Itasca, IL - The National Safety Council (NSC) today announced that McGraw-Hill Higher Education has been selected as the exclusive publisher of a new line of emergency care training programs that include all first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training materials available from the NSC. The announcement was made today at an event held at the National Safety Council's national headquarters in suburban Chicago.

More than 2.5 million students annually take first aid and CPR courses, primarily to fulfill job or educational requirements. Most of the students are employed in medical professions or in industrial settings. In addition to courses taught in the workplace, first aid and CPR are included as required components in almost every health care student curriculum. For more than 20 years, NSC chapters and third party service providers have offered published materials that teach basic first aid and CPR, and have become industry standards.

"We are pleased to partner with McGraw-Hill Higher Education to provide our full line of publications and supplementary products related to emergency care training," said NSC President and Chief Executive Officer Alan McMillan. "This agreement will give us broader access to the student populations that benefit directly from the emergency training programs for which we are known."

"We are honored to work with the NSC as we expand the distribution of these critical emergency training materials to the higher education, business and health care communities," said Ed Stanford, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education. "This agreement reflects our commitment to enhance the learning process by broadening access to proven life-saving information for first responders and emergency care providers."

The new and completely rewritten versions of the NSC's standard first aid and CPR training materials will incorporate current American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiac Care. To ensure that the NSC continues to incorporate all the components of an effective emergency care training program, instructor teaching packages will include an enhanced version of the instructor resource manual incorporating first aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) skills all in one manual.

The instructor manual has also been revised to incorporate vignettes and questions within the text to promote class interaction and enhance student understanding. A supplemental DVD illustrating emergency care training is included in the instructor teaching package. All student manuals are full-color and easy to read. Key skills are laid out in an easy-to-recall format that helps the lay person to recognize and act in an emergency and to sustain life until professional help can arrive.
