National Safety Council Announces Johnson & Johnson
2005 Robert W. Campbell Award Winner

“Intense competition” yields Hong Kong-Based MTR Corporation runner-up

Orlando, FL—The National Safety Council announced today that Johnson & Johnson is the 2005 recipient of its Robert W. Campbell Award. Donna M. Cappizzi, Director Worldwide Health and Safety of Johnson & Johnson, accepted the award during the opening session of the National Safety Council’s 93 rd Annual Congress & Expo in Orlando, FL.

This international award for business excellence recognizes companies that successfully integrated health, safety and environmental management into their overall business operations. The award, co-founded by the National Safety Council and Exxon Mobil Corporation, is supported by 16 global partner organizations.

In presenting the award, ExxonMobil Senior Vice President Edward G. Galante praised Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to safety and health. “Our winner has developed comprehensive and sophisticated systems as part of its deep commitment to the health and safety of its employees,” Galante said.

According to Mei-Li Lin, National Safety Council Executive Director for Research and Statistical Services and Campbell Award Program Director, “After the extensive review by an international panel of experts and a rigorous on-site assessment, it was agreed that Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to safety, health and environmental management and business excellence exemplifies the ideals and goals of Robert W. Campbell and the award that bears his name.”

Citing “intense competition” among applicants who “exemplify the spirit of safety this award celebrates,” Galante presented the runner-up award to MTR Corporation of Hong Kong, a leading company providing mass transit railway services in Hong Kong as its principal business. Galante commended MTR Corporation’s reduction of safety risks and conservation of electricity throughout its train network through rigorous, top-to-bottom safety and environmentally responsible systems.

About the Campbell Award and Its Educational Outreach

Named for Robert W. Campbell, an early advocate of workplace safety and the first president of the National Safety Council, the Award (www.CampbellAward.org) is underwritten by the Exxon Mobil Corporation through its philanthropic Foundation.

Twenty-three companies applied for the award. Ten companies completed the full application process that included extensive detailing of key aspects of their SH&E programs. An international panel of independent reviewers examined each application in a rigorous assessment process.

Exemplary business models selected through the Campbell Award review process will be made available by the National Safety Council to the Award’s global partners and interested universities throughout the world.

Johnson & Johnson is the second recipient of the award. Noble Corporation, a Texas-based provider of drilling services for the oil and gas industry, was the inaugural winner in 2004.
