How Your Organization Can Get Involved

Dear Friend:

Motivating the public to change behavior is no small challenge, but providing people with the facts they need to make informed decisions is half the battle.

With this in mind, the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign has developed the enclosed Communication Action Kit to help educate and clarify the lifesaving capabilities of air bags and how drivers can minimize the risks to passengers - especially children.

Through in-depth focus group and survey research, the Campaign has designed a straight-forward message to motivate the public to buckle up on every trip and ensure kids are properly restrained in the back seat. The research also found that the public has faith in air bags, but parents and caregivers want to know what to do to keep their children safe. Therefore, the Campaign has developed safety points in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - points which should be incorporated in any form of public communication on this issue.

The Campaign's approach is based on a simple message, "Air Bag Safety: Buckle everyone! Children in back!" In this kit you will find a range of materials to communicate this air bag safety message to a variety of audiences, including but not limited to consumers, employers/employees, elected officials, law enforcement, and health care professionals. And, whether you pro-actively work with media, or operate in more of a response mode, these materials will help prepare you and provide you with the tools you need to adequately meet media requests.

Specifically, the kit contains:

It is urgent that we move now to educate Americans about air bag safety. As the number of vehicles equipped with passenger air bags increases, the risks to improperly restrained kids also will increase. Therefore, we hope you will pro-actively use this kit to incorporate the air bag safety message in your communication plans.

Please let us know how we can better support your efforts to communicate this message. We are always open to suggestions on additional materials or revisions on current information. Please contact the Campaign at (202) 625-2570 if you have questions or suggestions, or need additional kits.

We appreciate your support of the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign and look forward to working with you on this most important public education initiative. Thank you.
