‘Popcorn Workers Lung’
Congressional action: Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-CA, introduced a
bill June 13 that would compel OSHA to issue within 90 days of enactment
an interim final standard on workers’ exposure to diacetyl in microwave popcorn
and flavor manufacturing plants.

The science: The Project on Scientific Knowledge and Public Policy publishes
a Website that
tracks scientific and regulatory developments regarding diacetyl.
NIOSH resources: NIOSH provides access to
findings and recommendations by agency scientists to reduce the risk of
severe obstructive lung disease (bronchiolitis obliterans) associated with occupational
exposure to flavorings.
OSHA information: OSHA maintains a Safety and Health Topics
page containing information related to flavorings-related lung diseases.
In California: Look over a
draft (.pdf file) of a potential diacetyl regulation
currently under discussion by a Cal/OSHA advisory committee.
