The truth about driveway backovers

Every year, about 7,000 children are backed over, most just 2 years old or younger. Over a hundred children die each year. Even with sensory systems such as rearview cameras or beeping object detection devices, researchers have found that 1/2 of drivers still hit objects behind them. Minivans, SUVs and trucks are the vehicles that have the biggest blind zones behind them, up to nearly 70 feet. Diligent parents and educated children are the best means to combat these tragic and preventable deaths.

Tips for Prevention

  • Walk 360° around your car every time you are leaving. Young kids often run outside to say "bye bye" to their mommy and daddy. Drivers can then easily miss children behind the vehicle.
  • Teach your children to never play in or around vehicles.
  • Consider installing devices such as rearview cameras and sensors to reduce your blind zone. This should not be used as a replacement to the 360° walk around.
  • Have children stand to the side so you can see all of them as you leave.
  • Teach them to move away when the vehicle is started.
  • Be especially vigilant during hectic times, schedule changes, family gatherings and holidays as this is when most children are injured or killed.

Legislation

Legislation recently signed into law will ensure that:

  • Data is collected and released to the public about preventable non-traffic incidents involving children.
