2009 National Radon Poster Contest
Guidelines and Criteria
The Contest
Each state, tribe, and territory has a radon poster contest. Each of these judging
panels will submit its winner and two runner-ups for judging in the national contest.

The Prize
- The winning national poster will be unveiled at an awards ceremony in Washington,
D.C., in January 2009.
- The national winner, a parent, and teacher (or sponsoring organization’s representative)
will win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the ceremony.
- The national winning poster will be reproduced into a nationally distributed poster.
Eligibility
Children ages 9-14, enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, Department
of Defense, or home school, or through a sponsoring club (such as an art, computer,
or science club, scouting organization, or 4-H club) are eligible.
Poster Topics
One of the following radon topics must be depicted in the artwork:
- What is radon?
- Where does radon come from?
- How does radon get into our homes?
- Radon can cause lung cancer
- Test your home for radon
Artwork Requirements
- Artwork must be original.
- Student name must not be on the front of the
artwork.
- Posters should have a title on the front.
- The topic and title must be on the Artwork Submission Form.
- Entries should be on white paper.
- Materials may include crayon, markers, paint (watercolor, tempera, acrylic), collage,
photographs, or computer graphics.
- Lettering and message should be large enough to reproduce well. All pencil markings
should be erased.
- Copyrighted characters (such as Snoopy), product logos, and trademarked or brand
names cannot be used.
Judging Criteria
- Content accuracy
- Visual communication of topic
- Reproducibility
- Originality
Entry Submission
- Entries will not be accepted before July 1, 2008, or after October 15, 2008.
- Only one entry may be submitted per child.
- The Artwork Submission Form must be completed (legibly!) and submitted with the poster (preferably
taped to the back of the poster).

- Information on where to submit entries for each state, tribal nation, territory,
and DoD school is available at Submission Map.
- The poster entry and Artwork Submission Form must be received no later than October 15, 2008
