New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has two driver improvement programs: Driver Improvement Program (DIP) for experienced drivers and Probationary Driver Program (PDP) for new drivers. Drivers completing these programs receive a three point reduction credit.
Under new regulations, the Driver Improvement Program is a four hour program offered in lieu of a 30-day suspension for drivers who accumulate 12 to 14 points in more than two years. Information about the program is included in the Notice of Scheduled Suspension that you receive in the mail. Up to three points will be removed from your driving record if you successfully complete the program. This is a voluntary program.
Per the regulations, Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving, DDC-ADD, from the National Safety Council is the ONLY course approved for the DIP. In the four-hour classroom DDC-ADD course, drivers will learn how choices they make while driving could result in serious financial, legal, and personal costs as well as how their attitude impacts on-the-road decision making. A plan is developed for making long-term driving behavior changes.
The fee for taking this classroom program is $75. There is an additional $75 fee due to the Motor Vehicle Commission as well.
When you are issued a driver license permit for the first time, you become a probationary driver. During the two-year probation period, if you are convicted of two or more moving violations with a total of four or more points, or you are convicted of a violation of specific sections of the law or any other motor vehicle law the chief administrator deems to be significant and applicable pursuant to regulation, you will be required to enroll in the Probationary Driver School Program to correct improper or dangerous driving practices.
Per the regulations, Alive at 25® offered by the National Safety Council is an approved course for the PDP. Alive at 25® is a highly interactive four-hour classroom intervention program that zeroes in on drivers ages 16 to 25 — the group most likely to be involved in a fatal collision. Alive at 25® uses workbook exercises, group discussions, role-playing and short lectures to help keep young drivers safe on the road.
