Beatrice was given a prestigious honor during Tuesday’s Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Luncheon. Beatrice becomes the 253rd community in the world named an “International Safe Community” and only the 16th in the U.S. Three other communities in Nebraska have also earned an “International Safe Community” designation. “We really want to make a difference and not just for a sign coming into town saying we’re safe or a designation on a letterhead. We honestly believe that safety matters. Safety impacts us all in a positive way,” Privett said. The committee’s goal is to get the whole Norfolk community excited about safety. “We want the number of injuries to be a zero. Dan Martin of the New Lenox Police Department has been working with various community members on safety initiatives, and he was proud to update the Village Board on his groups progress Monday night.
New Lenox is one of two communities in Illinois, and one of nine nationwide, to be recognized as one of America’s Safe Communities. Martin was charged with the task of making and keeping New Lenox on this list. [News Release]

Safe Communities Canada, a certifying arm of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion, has named Hagerstown a Safe Community for the city’s outstanding efforts in developing and offering safety programs to its residents, according to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The city is one of only 11 communities in the U.S., and the first in Maryland to achieve this recognition for a strong teamwork approach in applying evidence-based injury prevention strategies.
