A Healthy People 2020 goal for tobacco is to reduce illness, disability, and death to tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. Goals that apply to workplaces include:
1. Reduce tobacco use by adults – cigarette smoking (smokeless tobacco and cigars are included in HP 2020)
- : In 2008, 20.6 percent of adults aged 18 year and older were current cigarette smokers
- : Reduce proportion of smoking adults to 12.0 percent
2. Increase smoking cessation attempts by all adult smokers
- : In 2008, 48.4 percent of smoking adults aged 18 years and older attempted to stop smoking in the past 12 months.
- : Increase to 80 percent of all smoking adults.
3. Increase recent smoking cessation success by adult smokers
- : In 2008, 6 percent of adult smokers aged 18 years and older last smoked 6 months to 1 year ago
- : Increase this to 8 percent of adult smokers
- Implement a tobacco free policy in your workplace; if you have a smoke free policy, expand to a smoke free campus.
- Increase access to programs that support individual cessation efforts. These may be available through your health care provider, EAP or through state quit lines (1-800-QUIT-NOW).
- Evaluate the progress of your program continually through the implementation.
