Benchmark to National Health Goals
to improve vaccination rates

Heathy People 2020 has identified increasing immunization rates to improve the health of the American public in the next 10 years.

Goals that apply to workplaces include:

1. Increase the percentage of adults who are vaccinated anually against seasonal influenza.

• Baseline: In 2008, 25% of adults 18-64 were vaccinated against seasonal influenza
• Target: Increase vaccination rates to 80%. A 55% increase in 10 years.

2. Increase percentage of adults who are vaccinated against pneumococcal disease - adults 65 years and older.

• Baseline: In 2008, 60 percent reported ever receiving the pneumococcal vaccination.
• Target: Increase to 90%; a 30% increase.

3. Increase the percentage of adults who are vaccinated against shingles (zoster).

• Target: Increase to 30% of adults; a 23% increase.

What you can do

1. Assess the current rates of coverage among your employees and, if possible, their families. Use medical claims data or employee surveys to set up your baseline.
2. Refer to HP 2020 and set goals based on what vaccinations are available and promoted in your workplace. Goals can vary from a 23% to a 55% increase in vaccination rates.
3. Explore the program elements to develop an initiative based on your employees needs.
4. Regularly evaluate the progress of your program.
