What Can Employers Do?
Employers can make a difference by making healthy eating the easy option.
These options and others can create a culture where healthy eating is encouraged and supported. Some activities may be easier to implement than others. But an employers' commitment is first and foremost to seeing improvements in employees’ safety and health.
Workplace activities can easily transfer beyond the workplace and affect employees’ families. In a study done at IBM, employees completed a voluntary, web-based program and earned $150 rebate. The program lasted 12 weeks and participants chose family goals from a list of options including:
As for nutrition, the study showed an 11.8% increase of eating healthy dinners five nights a week. The study authors suggest that based on these results, employers can improve some short-term behaviors of employees and their families.
