Gasoline and other flammable liquids should only be stored in approved containers based on specifications developed by the Department of Transportation, OSHA, the National Fire Protection Association and the American National Standards Institute.

Fuel spills or releases, using gasoline to kindle fire, and using or storing gasoline too close to a heat source are all common causes of fires, according to NFPA. The association offers the following information for safe storage and handling of gasoline: 

• Follow all manufacturers’ guidelines for storing flammable and combustible liquids and when using electronic devices near gasoline.
• Do not use or store gasoline near possible ignition sources such as electrical devices, oil- or gas-fired appliances, or another device with a pilot flame or spark.
• Never store gasoline in glass or non-reusable plastic containers.
• Never use gasoline as a cleaning agent.
• Spills must be cleaned up promptly and all materials discarded properly.
• Avoid smoking under all circumstances when handling gasoline.
• Never use gasoline as a substitute for kerosene.
• Portable gasoline containers should only be filled outdoors.
