Arlington, VA – The American Trucking Associations on Feb. 7 called on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to remove not-at-fault crash data from commercial motor vehicle carriers’ safety records.
FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability program’s Safety Measurement System considers all crashes involving a carrier’s drivers when calculating the carrier’s public crash-risk score. ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said in a statement that doing so is inappropriate if a driver could not have reasonably prevented a crash.
ATA noted several recent examples, including an SUV colliding into a fuel tanker, a car crashing into a truck after crossing a median and a drunk driver rear-ending a gasoline truck.
FMCSA is scheduled to complete a study by this summer on whether determining fault in a crash would better identify high-crash-risk carriers. ATA called on FMCSA to begin removing records now where it is “plainly evident” a carrier was not at fault.
