Campaign focuses on winter home fires

Emmitsburg, MD – Home fires occur most often during the winter, and the National Fire Protection Association and U.S. Fire Administration are educating the public on fire prevention.

Heating and cooking result in the most winter home fires, according to a USFA press release. Ways to reduce fire risk include:

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period, turn off the stove.
  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from any item that can burn.
  • Check electrical cords often and replace any that are cracked or damaged.
  • Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home. They are not designed for this purpose and can be a fire and carbon monoxide hazard.
  • Keep real Christmas tree stands filled with water at all times and place the tree at least 3 feet from any heating source.
