Arlington, VA – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is encouraging commercial motor vehicle carriers to review their scores and safety data in the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program’s Safety Measurement System following changes that went into effect Dec. 3.

The changes were developed following a four-month comment period in which 19,000 carriers and 2,900 law enforcement personnel provided input on a series of proposed changes. Among the changes:

• Intermodal equipment violations found during pre-trip inspections will be counted against carriers’ scores.
• Speeding violations recorded in the previous 24 months of data and moving forward will be consistent with current regulations that speedometers be accurate within 5 mph.
• Paper and electronic logbook violations will be weighted equally in the CSA system.

Additionally, FMCSA changed the “Cargo-Related” Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Category to “Hazardous Materials Compliance,” but that change is under further review.
