Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is urging commercial motor vehicle carriers to update vehicle-miles-traveled and power unit information as soon as possible. The information will be used in the upcoming Compliance, Safety, Accountability program’s Safety Measurement System snapshot to be published in February.

FMCSA uses VMT and PU data, which carriers record on the registration form known as MCS-150, to assign carrier scores in the “Unsafe Driving” and “Crash Indicator” Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories. The “Unsafe Driving” category tracks violations committed by drivers, such as speeding and improper lane changes. The “Crash Indicator” category tracks patterns of fleet vehicle crash involvement using data from state-reported crashes.

If not updated, carriers with VMT data from 2010 or older in the database will be assigned scores based on average power units reported over the previous 18 months, FMCSA stated.
