Washington – A new special issue of the Journal of Safety Research focuses on 15 research projects presented at the 2011 National Occupational Injury Research Symposium.

The symposium was sponsored by the National Safety Council, NIOSH and the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. Study findings include:

• Roof fatalities made up one-third of fatal construction falls from 1992 to 2009, and 67 percent of fatal roof falls occurred at establishments with 10 or fewer employees, according to a study from the Center for Construction Research and Training.
• After being given fall protection training, foremen in residential construction engaged in more mentoring and toolbox talks, resulting in greater use of fall protection and fewer unsafe behaviors, found a study from Washington University.
• Special education teachers have a higher risk of experiencing workplace violence than other educators, according to a NIOSH study of Pennsylvania education workers.

The studies appeared in the February issue of the journal, which is published by the National Safety Council.
