Get Involved During National Teen Driver Safety Week

Use these simple steps and resources to help keep teen drivers safe.

October 18, 2021

Each October, we observe National Teen Driver Safety Week to call attention to the challenges faced by teen drivers and explore how we can all work to keep each other safe behind the wheel. These efforts are perhaps more important than ever, as our roadways are becoming increasingly dangerous.

Last year, the U.S. saw a 24% annual rise in the death rate on our roads and preliminary estimates from the National Safety Council show that this trend has continued into 2021. According to these estimates, more than 21,400 people have been killed on our roads through the first six months of the year, a 16% increase over the already alarmingly deadly 2020.

At DriveitHOME, we believe parents can make a difference by getting involved as their teens learn to drive. During National Teen Driver Safety Week (Oct. 17-23), here are some ways that parents and guardians can help keep our most inexperienced road users safe:

  • Sign up for free weekly Pointers for Parents lessons to help your new teen driver build experience behind the wheel. The lessons cover everything from risky driving habits to different roadway scenarios you can talk through and practice with your teen.
  • Download, sign and display the New Driver Deal. Having a parent-teen driving agreement enables both parties to get on the same page about responsibilities and risk factors.
  • Share educational materials around teen safe driving in your workplace and other organizations. These free resources can help keep your co-workers, neighbors and their loved ones safe.
  • Find out if the vehicle your teen will drive has any open recalls. It’s free to check online and recalls are free to repair at a dealer.
  • Always model good driving behaviors and habits. Your teen is watching and learning from you behind the wheel, so drive the way you’d want your teen to drive.

Car crashes are the leading cause of preventable death for teens but we can all take steps to help keep them safe. Visit DriveitHome.org for more information and tips.
