Even though a new parent company has not been identified, the University of Kentucky College of Public Health Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC) will navigate the program during this transition. In addition, all accredited communities will remain members of the Pan Pacific Safe Communities Network.
Safe Communities America is part of an international movement to improve partnerships, enhance injury prevention efforts and promote safety at the local level.
Regional networks also were developed to facilitate further collaboration among Safe Communities members. Safe Communities America is a founding member of the Pan Pacific Safe Communities regional network, which includes more than 100 communities from
New Zealand, and the
Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC) is the PPSCN International Support Center for the United States. As a PPSCN Support Center, they provide education, support, assistance and advice on safety promotion and injury- and violence-prevention to the communities in the U.S. and the Pan Pacific region. PPSCN International Support Centers work in conjunction with their national accrediting center and are committed to the principles and framework of the PPSCN.
KIPRC was reaccredited a PPSCN International Support Center in November 2017.
The Safe Communities movement grew out of the First World Conference on Accident and Injury Prevention, in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1989. The Manifesto for Safe Communities, emerging from that conference, provided the foundation for the international Safe Communities movement, and for Safe Communities America.
