NSC, PAVE Coalition Invite Public to Ride in Self-Driving Vehicles in Detroit

Itasca, Ill. – The National Safety Council is pleased to participate in the PAVE Coalition’s first public event since its January launch – a free demo experience in Detroit April 5-7, where drivers can ride in a self-driving vehicle and learn more about the technology through hands-on displays with PAVE Coalition partner organizations. Since space is limited, interested drivers must register in advance and select the date they wish to participate.

Automated vehicle technology holds promise to reshape traffic safety, but the driving public remains undereducated about the technology’s capabilities. In the meantime, motor vehicle crashes continue to be a leading cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 40,000 annually. According to a report released last year by the Road to Zero Coalition and the RAND Corporation, the solution to ending roadway deaths involves a three-tiered approach that includes accelerating advanced technology.

In addition to riding in a self-driving vehicle, Detroit demo attendees will be able to ask self-driving vehicle developer, Dataspeed, Inc., questions about the technology. The event is made possible through PAVE’s partnership with SAE International.
