Itasca, IL – Applications are still being accepted for the 2018 Safe System Innovation Grants through the Road to Zero coalition – a nationwide initiative managed by the National Safety Council to end all motor vehicle deaths by 2050. The grants are open to organizations with innovative approaches to making roadways safer and eliminating preventable roadway deaths. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 26, 2018, with winners announced in March.
"With roadway deaths on the rise, it is more important than ever that we find and fund new solutions to old problems," said NSC President and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman. "We hope to see innovative proposals that save lives, prevent injuries and make the roadways safer for everyone who uses them."
First-year grant recipients included the Los Angeles Police Department, Chicago Department of Transportation, Roadway Safety Foundation, National Complete Streets Coalition, San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency, National Association of County Engineers and University of Michigan Traffic Research Institute.
To qualify for a Safe System Innovation Grant, an organization needs to clearly explain how its program will reduce motor-vehicle crashes, set a timeframe for the reduction, outline how the program will be evaluated, and detail how the organization intends to reach its target audience, among other elements.
The Road to Zero initiative was launched in October 2016 by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the National Safety Council. The Department of Transportation has committed $1 million annually for three years to fund the Safe System Innovation Grants, and NSC is managing the grant selection process.
