NSC Commends President Trump for Signing H.R. 6 – the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council applauds President Trump for signing into law sweeping legislation that will combat the opioid crisis and save lives. H.R. 6 – the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act – includes numerous provisions that will help address the worst drug crisis in recorded U.S. history.

NSC has advocated for several elements in H.R. 6 for many years, including better access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT), expanded use of non-addictive pain treatment alternatives, and lifting caps on the number of prescribers who can prescribe MAT. It will take many different stakeholders from both government and private organizations working in tandem to end the opioid epidemic, and H.R. 6 outlines ways to collaborate most effectively.

During today’s White House event, “A Year of Historic Action to Combat the Opioid Crisis,” the National Safety Council committed to continuing to spread awareness of the crisis through our Prescribed to Death traveling memorial, and educating 1,000 more physicians on safer prescribing practices. In addition, NSC will continue working with employers to address opioid misuse in the workplace so our workforce is as healthy as it is strong.

We appreciate the Administration’s dedication to the opioid epidemic. The National Safety Council was honored to attend today’s event, and we look forward to continuing to partner on effective ways to eliminate preventable deaths.
