NSC Partners with Independent Auto Dealers on Vehicle Recall Campaign

NIADA will promote awareness, collaborate on innovative solutions as part of Check To Protect initiative.

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council is pleased to welcome an automobile industry partner in support of its Check To Protect campaign, which seeks to reduce the number of vehicles with open recalls.

The National Independent Automobile Dealers Association has joined forces with the Council to promote the campaign and develop innovative strategies to fix recalls in member dealers’ inventories. More than one in five vehicles has an open recall, and many of those recalls may pose risks to occupants.

NIADA joins the Governors Highway Safety Association, National Auto Auction Association, National Automobile Dealers Association and more than a dozen states in working with the Council to reduce open recalls. Drivers can learn their vehicle’s recall status quickly by visiting www.CheckToProtect.org.

“Vehicle recalls have reached record highs, and it will require a collective effort to tackle this problem,” said Kelly Nantel, vice president of communications and advocacy for the NSC. “NIADA has taken a leadership role when it comes to reducing open recalls for dealers and drivers alike. Together, we can find solutions to reduce open recalls both in the short term and the long term.”

NIADA has more than 16,000 member dealers across the United States. Independent dealers sometimes face challenges in repairing used vehicles with open recalls, and the Council will work with other partners on Check To Protect to alleviate these obstacles and create opportunities for more repairs.

“The Check To Protect initiative aligns perfectly with NIADA’s longstanding efforts to see that 100% of recalled vehicles are repaired,” NIADA CEO Steve Jordan said. “While independent dealers by law cannot make recall repairs themselves, the association and its member dealers will work through Check To Protect to make sure used car inventory is checked for recalls and that any open recalls are repaired prior to sale.”

Check To Protect launched in June 2017 as a collaboration between the Council and founding partner FCA US. More than 760,000 drivers visited www.CheckToProtect.org in the first year of the campaign.

The National Independent Automobile Dealers Association is among the nation's largest trade associations, representing the used motor vehicle industry comprised of more than 38,000 licensed used car dealers. Since 1946, NIADA has represented the voice and interests of used car dealers at the federal level in Washington, D.C. Coupled with its state association network across the country, NIADA’s grass-roots framework provides a dual layer of advocacy unmatched in the used motor vehicle industry.

For more than 70 years, NIADA has engineered programs and leveraged technology to fulfill its mission to advance, educate and promote the independent used car dealer. NIADA members subscribe to a strict Code of Ethics of duty, honor and integrity, and believe in the advancement of small business in support of the free-market system.
