NSC Statement on Decline in Accidental Deaths

CDC numbers are encouraging, but the only acceptable number is zero.

January 30, 2020

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council is cautiously optimistic with new CDC data showing the number of deaths from unintentional, preventable injuries – commonly known as “accidents” – decreased 1.7% in 2018 compared to 2017, when numbers reached an all-time high. Additionally, NSC is pleased to see that life expectancy increased for the first time in three years, in part because of drops in preventable deaths. Despite these encouraging statistics, preventable injuries still remain the third leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer, with 167,127 reported in 2018.

Any decline in deaths is promising, but the only acceptable number is zero. Too many people are losing their lives due to causes that are completely unnecessary and unnatural. The new CDC data indicates the nation’s collective complacency costs more than 457 lives on a typical day because of drug overdosesmotor vehicle crashesfallsdrowningchoking incidents or other preventable occurrences.
