NSC Statement on Fatal Indiana Crash Involving Children Boarding a School Bus

Itasca, IL – On Tuesday, the nation was tragically reminded that while school buses remain the safest way to transport our children to and from class, the areas surrounding school buses still pose significant safety risks. While deaths related to school buses thankfully are rare, 70% of them occur to those outside of the bus – to other motorists, pedestrians, cyclists or children boarding, as was the reported case on Tuesday in Indiana, when three children were killed and another seriously injured after being struck by another vehicle.

On the eve of Halloween – one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians – motorists and non-motorists alike must remember how to safely share the roadway. As we work to protect children on the bus by advocating for three-point seat belts, we must also remember to be cautious around buses. Drivers should always obey the school bus flashing signs and stop arms, and take another look even after the bus has started to pull away. Those waiting to board the bus are encouraged to stand as far away from the road and traffic as possible.
