NSC Statement on H.R. 6 SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act

Bill includes multiple provisions to address the opioid crisis.

October 04, 2018

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council applauds Congress for passing HR 6 – SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act. This bill includes numerous provisions that will help address the worst drug crisis in recorded U.S. history.

Among its many life-saving provisions, H.R. 6 increases access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT), encourages the use of non-addictive pain treatment alternatives, lifts caps on the number of prescribers who can prescribe MAT and reauthorizes the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The bill also spreads the responsibility to curb the epidemic across several different government agencies and private organizations. Collaboration and coordinated efforts are sorely needed, and this bill helps outline ways to work together most effectively.

We appreciate the Administration’s continued attention to the opioid epidemic. With more than 115 people dying every day from opioid overdose, strong laws like this cannot come soon enough, and we cannot stop fighting until we reach zero deaths.
