Cindy L. Hanawalt, MD, PhD

Physician, Medical Director, Bettis Atomic Laboratory

Dr. Hanawalt grew up in central Iowa and worked in corporate health and fitness prior to completing graduate training in community health and preventive medicine. She received her PhD and MD from the University of Iowa and is board certified in family medicine.

After serving as an independent physician in Cedar Rapids for 25 years, she joined an occupational medicine practice and served as health and wellness director. She is currently the medical director for the Naval Nuclear Laboratory in Pennsylvania. Her leadership experience includes serving as Family Medicine Department chair, president of Medical Staff, president of Linn County Medical Society, board member Iowa Medical Society, delegate to the National Safety Council and counsel to hospital and industry DEI committees. She is also serving as chief resident in the train in place Occupational Medicine Residency with UPenn.

She and her husband enjoy staying active, spending time at the lake, listening to music and connecting with their three children.
