New Jersey Driver Improvement Program FAQs

Is the New Jersey Driver Improvement Program (NJ DIP) mandatory?

No. This program is offered in lieu of a 30-day suspension for drivers who accumulate 12 to 14 points in more than two years.

How do I know if I am eligible for this program?

If this course is an option for you, information about the program will be included in the Scheduled Suspension Notice that you receive in the mail from New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC).

How can I complete the NJ DIP?

For a limited time only, the NJ MVC has temporarily approved our Virtual Instructor-Led Training as an alternative way to complete the NJ DIP classroom course. You can easily participate in a virtual training class from anywhere, using just about any device with video chat capabilities and internet connection. Classes fill quickly; it is recommended that you register for the course within 30 days from the date of issue on your Scheduled Suspension Notice to ensure you are able to complete the program within the required timeframe. Reserve your seat today! Call 877-441-9721 to enroll.

What kind of device do I need to attend a Virtual Training class?

You can easily participate in a Virtual Training class using just about any device with video chat capabilities and internet connection.

Your device must have:

  • Camera - You will be required to be visible on camera for the entire class.
  • Microphone (headset with microphone is recommended, to reduce background noise). You will be required to participate in class throughout the day by responding to questions, adding to group discussions and completing activities.
  • Internet Connection - A hard-wired connection is preferred, but a Wi-Fi connection is also acceptable.

If you are attending your Virtual Training class using your cell phone or other wireless device:

  • Download the WebEx app BEFORE the day of class.
  • Have your charger handy, your device will need to stay powered on for the entire class.
  • Connect using Wi-Fi instead of cellular data when available for better stability.

If you are attending your virtual training class using your PC or laptop:

  • You will be prompted to choose to install the application or join from your browser. Either option will work.

What is the cost of the NJ DIP?

The cost of the NJ DIP is $75 and includes electronic communication of your program completion to the NJ MVC.

How can I enroll in a virtual training class?

Classes fill quickly! Call (877) 441-9721 to enroll today.

Why do I need to provide an email address to register for the virtual training class?

You must provide an email address to receive your virtual training class confirmation, which includes a link to your virtual training classroom.

How will I receive my course materials?

Your course guide and Self-assessment Profile will arrive to the mailing address you verified during registration a day or two before your scheduled class date. You must show that you have your course materials available on the day of class to be admitted to your virtual training classroom. If you have not received your course materials by the afternoon the day before your class, please call (877) 441-9721 to reschedule prior to the class at no fee. When rescheduling, verify/update the mailing address on your account to ensure that you will receive your course materials.

What if I need my course guide sent to a temporary address or my mailing address changes after registration?

If you have a new permanent mailing address, update that information with us when registering for class. If you need your course materials sent to a temporary address, make sure you relay that information when registering. If you need to change your mailing address after registration, call (877) 441-9721 and one of our team members will be happy to assist you. Please note: you must call at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled class date to change the mailing address for your course materials.

How do I access my virtual training class and what do I have to bring?

You must attend class in a distraction-free environment and must stay in a single location throughout the duration of class.

AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE the scheduled start time of your class, click on the virtual training classroom link in your confirmation email.

In the login area, enter your first name and first initial of your last name, as shown in your confirmation email, and your email address and click “Join Meeting.”

For your privacy, class check-in is completed on an individual basis. You will wait in the lobby of your virtual training classroom as students are admitted one by one to complete the check-in process. You may be waiting for 30 minutes or more. Please be patient. If you lose connection, simply click on the link in your confirmation email again and go back to the virtual training classroom.

During check-in, be prepared to show:

  • Your Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving course guide & Self-Assessment Profile. If you do not have your course guide and Self-Assessment Profile you will not be admitted to your Virtual Training class and will need to reschedule.
  • A form of photo ID. Examples of acceptable photo identification include a government-issued driver’s license or photo identification card or a secondary school-issued photo identification. If you are unable to provide photo identification, you will not be admitted to your Virtual Training class and will need to reschedule. A mandatory rescheduling fee of $25 will apply.

After you are checked in, you will be placed back into the "lobby" of your virtual training classroom while the check-in process is completed for all students. Once everyone is checked in, all students will be brought back into the virtual training classroom from the "lobby" and class will begin. Please be patient. If you lose connection, simply click on the link in your confirmation email again and go back to the virtual training classroom.

What happens if I log into my virtual training class late?

You are required to begin the check-in process at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled class start time to provide identification and show that you are prepared with the required course materials. If you attempt to check in after class has begun, you will not be admitted to the virtual training classroom. You must arrive to your Virtual Training class and return from all scheduled breaks on time. If you arrive or return after the class has begun, you will not be admitted and will need to reschedule your class. A mandatory rescheduling fee of $25 will apply.

What happens if I lose connection during my Virtual Training class?

If you are disconnected at any time during your virtual training class, immediately click on the virtual training classroom link in your confirmation email to re-enter the class. You must attend the entire virtual training class to receive credit. If you are disconnected and do not return to class, or miss an excessive amount of class time due to technical difficulties or other reasons, you will be required to reschedule your class. A mandatory rescheduling fee of $25 will apply. All course fees are non-refundable. Refunds will not be granted for failure to attend or complete your virtual training class due to technical issues.

How long is the course and what should I expect?

The NJ DIP class is 4 hours in length and aimed at changing behavior behind the wheel. Through this course, drivers learn why they continue to have driving-related problems and how they can take responsibility for their actions. This course may provide you with the opportunity to keep your license while addressing your driving habits.

Is there a test at the end of the course?

No, successfully completing the NJ DIP does not require a test.

How will the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) know that I have completed the NJ DIP?

After you successfully complete the NJ Driver Improvement Program, National Safety Council electronically transmits your program completion information to the NJ MVC the following business day. The NJ MVC then updates your driver record within 5-7 business days.

What is the refund/cancellation policy?

  • Once registered all fees are non-refundable. If, after registering for the NJ Driver Improvement Program, you win an appeal and your suspension is rescinded, you may request a refund of class fees. Class fees will only be issued if you have not yet attended a class. Cancellation requests received after the class has been completed will NOT be eligible for a refund.
  • There will be no refunds due to technical issues. Students are responsible to ensure they have access to a device that meets the technical requirements to participate in Virtual Training prior to the class.
  • You can reschedule to a different date without a fee up to the day prior to your chosen class date. To reschedule, call (877) 441-9721.
  • Rescheduling on or after the start date of your class will require a mandatory, non-refundable $25 rescheduling fee. Reasons may include, but are not limited to:
    • Driver does not arrive to class
    • Driver is unprepared with course materials and/or identification
    • Driver arrives late to class
    • Driver is late returning from breaks or lunch
    • Driver is disconnected from the virtual training class and does not return
    • Driver misses 15 minutes or more of overall instruction due to technical or other issues

What is the bounced check/credit card chargeback policy?

Should your bank return your personal check to National Safety Council for insufficient funds (or any other reason), you will be charged a $25 returned check fee. If your credit card company processes a chargeback, you will be charged a $25 credit card chargeback fee. In either of these instances, only a money order or bank check will then be accepted for the class fee and the insufficient funds/chargeback fee. You may not be allowed to attend your scheduled class or your completion may not be reported to the NJ MVC until you have paid all appropriate fees.

What if English is not my first language?

All of our classes are in English unless otherwise noted. If you need assistance with translation, you are welcome to have someone with you to provide support during the class. They must be over the age of 18 and provide proper identification.

I no longer live in New Jersey; can I complete the NJ DIP while living in a different state?
