Oct. 18, 1999.

Michelle Garner-Janna remembers the exact date. What started off as a routine work day turned into one of the most pivotal of her life when a maintenance employee – a member of her work family – was electrocuted and died at work.

The loss gave Michelle a new perspective on the importance of safety and lead her to a career as the executive director of health, safety & environment for Cummins Inc. As a safety professional, she’s dedicated her life to making sure every employee gets home safe, every day.

Safety became personal to her on that October day when someone she knew didn’t make it home.

I sat down with Michelle for another of the National Safety Council Safety is Personal videos, a series of conversations with committed safety leaders on their careers in safety and the moments that made it personal to them.

Join me for this latest episode, in which Michelle shares her unique experiences as a woman in the manufacturing industry, speaks on the safety challenges faced by women in the workplace and offers advice for those starting out in their safety careers.

And if you haven’t already, view the first installment of the series, a conversation with National Safety Council Board member and Chief Operating Officer of Women in Governance Nicole Piggott, here.
