Adults account for less than 30 percent of exposures, but are almost 90 percent of the deaths from poisonings.  A significant number of these are related to medication.  Exposure to hazardous chemicals may also occur at work.

Workplaces can have hazardous chemicals on site, for which they receive Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) from the chemical manufacturers and distributors.  These MSDS are written to ensure that workers and employers have access to practical information on chemical hazards to help them prevent work-related illness and disease.  Workplaces can also have every day materials that can be hazardous.

However, employees who are used to working around hazardous chemicals, as well as employees who do not have chemicals in their workplace, can still be at risk for hazardous chemicals, medication overdose, and other poisonings in their home.  Poison exposure affects employees’ lives and employers’ bottom lines.

This kit is designed to help employers ensure that their workers are as safe from poisonings at home as they are at work.  This kit discusses employee outreach with step-by-step instructions, objectives and materials.

For poisonings that can be safely handled at home, call the national poison control center number at 1-800-222-1222.

For all other emergencies call 9-1-1 immediately.
